To score penalties in FC 26, wait for the composure ring around the ball to shrink to green, aim your left stick toward a bottom corner, hold shoot at roughly 90% power, and commit to your spot before the run-up begins. Never change direction mid-run-up.

The Composure Ring — Your Timing Window
Every penalty starts with a colored ring around the ball. It expands and contracts in a loop. The smaller the ring when you press shoot, the more accurate your shot lands.
- Green and small = perfect accuracy. This is your target window.
- Red or large = high risk of skying the ball or dragging it wide.
- Players with high Composure have a slower, easier-to-time ring. Low-composure players shrink fast and punish hesitation.
Here's the thing most guides skip. You do not need a perfect green timing every time. Aim for "small but green" and you will hit your target. Chasing the absolute smallest frame introduces panic and actually hurts your consistency.
If you play online and notice input lag, press shoot about half a beat earlier than you think you should. The ring shrinks on a predictable loop, so once you memorize the rhythm it becomes muscle memory.
Power, Aiming, and Controller Inputs
Aim with the left stick. The marker is invisible but accurate — push toward a corner and the ball goes there. Six zones exist: top-left, bottom-left, top-right, bottom-right, center-high, center-low.
Sticky aim is real. Once you push the stick in a direction, that aim locks. If you change your mind during the run-up, you must push the stick fully to the new spot. Half adjustments will not register.
| Shot Type | PlayStation | Xbox | When to Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | ○ (hold) | B (hold) | Bread and butter. Blast into a corner with power. |
| Finesse | R1 + ○ | RB + B | Curl into the side netting. Only reliable on the player's dominant foot side. |
| Panenka (Chip) | L1 + ○ | LB + B | Chip down the middle. Use only when you are sure the keeper dives early. |
The 90% Power Rule
This is the single most important number in FC 26 penalties. Hold the shoot button to about 90% power (just under three full bars). That is the sweet spot where the shot stays accurate but flies fast enough to beat the keeper.
- Full power = even with green timing, the ball can sail over the bar.
- Under 70% = too slow. The keeper saves it even on the correct guess.
- ~90% = controlled, accurate, and hard to stop.
Players with 90+ Shot Power can aim closer to the post and still hit the target. If your taker has 78 Shot Power, aim slightly inside the corner instead of trying to pick the absolute corner.
Pick the Right Penalty Taker
Two stats matter. Penalties controls accuracy. Composure controls the ring speed. Shot Power helps but is secondary.
Press R2 (or RT) during the penalty setup to manually select your taker. Do not let the game auto-pick — it often defaults to your striker, who may not have the best penalty stat.
Ideal Penalty Taker Profile
Look for Penalties 85+ / Composure 85+ / Shot Power 85+. Mbappé, Kane, Haaland, and De Bruyne all fit this profile. A player with 99 Shooting but 70 Composure will struggle with the ring timing.
Mind Games in Shootouts
Your player's head subtly tilts toward your aim direction. A sharp opponent reads this. Use it against them.
- Aim one direction early, then flick the stick fully the other way just before the run-up ends.
- Never aim the same corner twice in a shootout. Rotate through at least three different zones.
- If your opponent keeps diving early, a Panenka down the middle breaks their confidence.
- If they stop moving entirely, stop chipping. Go low corner with power.
The worst thing you can do is change your mind halfway through the run-up. Pick your spot, commit, and trust the timing. Hesitation kills more penalties than bad aim.
